Business Expert: Employers should rethink job ads
Today’s small business owner would be wise to reconsider the importance of the content contained in a job advertisement, says a New Jersey small business expert. According to Lonnie Sciambi, The Entrepreneur’s Yoda who owns The Small Business Force, today’s employers need to view job advertisements as more than a way of finding the best qualified candidates for an employment opportunity.
“It goes without saying employers want to hire the best applicant for the job,” says Sciambi. But, he says, hiring the right person for an employment opportunity means finding someone not only qualified for the position but who also fits the culture of the company.
That means a job ad highlighting an employment opportunity should detail not only the position itself, but also the cultural environment of the business. Among topics that should be explained include whether the workspace is designed for collaborative interaction, if coffee and snacks are freely available and perhaps even the company’s BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policies.
Moreover, job ads should be posted where potential candidates can be found. Sciambi says he is a fan of mega-job sites like Monster and Indeed and even Craigslist.
“You need to post your job ad where the candidates you’re seeking might be looking. In today’s business environment, that place is no longer the Sunday paper,” says Sciambi. That is, of course, unless you’re in the market for an older employee who is more likely to consult a newspaper’s ‘Help Wanted’ section rather than a web site online.
