Happy and satisfied employees are crucial for the success of an organization. Although companies must find ways of retaining employees during their good times, employee retention means a lot during a time of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic. With the pandemic that has led to various social distancing measures and slow down or closure of many businesses, maintaining and engaging staff offers a sense of stability and a feeling of trust by the organization. Here are some strategies that you should consider to find and retain new employees even during a pandemic:

  1. Go electronic

The social distancing measures are making person-to-person interaction difficult. For this reason, you should consider going electronic. This is likely to be a new normal in all spheres of life as people try to find alternative ways of doing things. Begin the hiring process by placing a digital job advertisement for the position you need to fill in your organization. Electronic hiring practices allow flexibility in work policies including work from home arrangements that are now common globally. Ensure that people know who you are by talking about your organization. Put applications online to allow potential employees to review job descriptions and explain the credentials of the person you are seeking.

  • Design formal and informal recognition programs

These programs allow employees to be recognized and appreciated for their hard work and commitment. Recognition programs inspire creativity, increases engagement, and make sure that places of work are not affected by the attitudes of disengaged employees. While remote work can be the order of things under the new environment, it does not negate the importance of recognition programs. The recognition programs should involve thanking employees for jobs well done, acknowledging employees and project teams, and hosting online celebrations for accomplishments and successes. Also, post online thank you notes for good work and maintain incentive programs that are common in on-premise working arrangements.

  • Offer remote professional development opportunities

It is the nature of professionals to look for fresh opportunities for growth and enhancement of their skills. This has become even more prevalent in the modern market conditions that keep changing faster than ever before. As a leader in your organization ensure that the staff attends virtual conferences, takes virtual online training courses, and completes corporate training online. Also, encourage team members to watch online talks such as TED Talks among others that are relevant to them. Also, schedule virtual lunch where training is provided by leaders. All these will encourage employees and motivate them to enhance productivity.

  • Give employees benefits

Employee benefits are important to any organization. As such, ensure that employees know their benefits such as vacation, sick leave, and time off. Ensure that the extended health safety and wellness schemes for your employees. Doing this ensures that the employees are happy and a happy employee is a productive one. Provide benefits such as the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Also, you can create a health and wellness spot where employees can use to stay healthy. Communicate with the relevant authorities to understand changes in the employment landscape. This will help you know what you can do to make your employees feel appreciated.

  • Define roles and responsibilities

An organization has many tasks, and it is only good that everyone understands their roles, duties, and responsibilities. This can be achieved by defining what everyone has to do and delegating the tasks accordingly. Delegation allows each employee to do their part and also ensures that work continues even when one is off duty due to COVID-19 interruptions or illnesses. Ensure that each employee has a backup. Such backups give assurances to all employees whether sick or healthy that they will not bear the brunt alone.
