Not Your Father's SEO: 4 Rules of Search Engine Marketing

Lots of small business owners are afraid of SEO. It seems to be a really scary, mysterious land that no one really understands. Well, you don't have to be an SEO pro to make it work for your small business. You just need to know the basics, and a few rules will help you to get started and get the most out of Search Engine Marketing.

First of all, you need to understand a little bit about what SEO is exactly. SEO is Search Engine Optimization. It is basically getting your website listed in the search results on search engines, without being one of the "paid links" that everyone avoids when looking at search results. You can get a ton of free traffic this way, if you know how to use SEO to your advantage.

Here are a few rules to get you started:

1. ALWAYS USE KEYWORDS AND ANCHOR TEXT

You should always use important keywords in your postings. You should use the keywords 5-7 times in your post. An important tip is to always make sure that they look natural, and not "stuffed in" the article. You have to make sure that the keywords flow, and flow well. Anchor text is also important. Anchor text is making sure that your links are filled with important text, instead of just saying "click here", or "find more information here". You could use anchor text such as "great restaurant" or "quality kids clothes" instead of something like "click here". Just keep in mind that your anchor text should always be relevant to the topic of the article.

2. LINK PAGES IN YOUR OWN BLOG/WEBSITE

You might really be interested in getting bloggers, website owners, etc. to link to your site. Now, that is great and wonderful. But please don't forget that you should be linking to old blog posts or other pages on your website. Using good anchor text, interlinking to other pages on your own site will increase your exposure and also increase your page views, etc. This is an easy and great way to help your site!

3.META TAGS/ALT IMAGE TAGS

Meta tags are a very important aspect of SEO. Meta Tags are a little hard to understand, but we will try to explain. A Meta Tag is a part of HTML coding that describes your web page to search engine crawlers. Your readers can't see it, but the web search folks will know that it's there. They can really help your page to show up in the right search engine pages. A quick Google Search can help you learn how to set up Meta Tags for your own page.In the same category, alt image tags are tags that you can use to describe an image so that search engines can find them easier.

4.CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT.

Always important! Make sure that what you are writing is relevant and usable. Never stop writing, never stop updating. Write original content, consistently. Keep your readers coming back, build your fan base, and grow your website. Promote your site everywhere that you possibly can: social media, forums, etc. Keep working hard, and you can definitely make SEO work for you!
