Apple Versus Android (Why Apple Will Always Dominate)

It's the tech battle of the ages, Apple versus Android, and while the battle is nowhere near over, it looks like things might be heating up just a tad with Apple's newest announcement. Apple has just unveiled both the new iPhone 5S and the "first of it's kind" iPhone 5C (a cheaper device aimed to draw in even more customers). So, why does this new announcement have Apple breaking away from Android in the never ending battle of the operating systems?

At Apple's launching event on September 10, Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller said:

"The iPhone 5C is made with all the incredible technology that customers have loved with the iPhone 5, but there's more, too. It has an incredible new design. One that's more fun, and more colorful than anything we've made before." Schiller even went so far as to say about the new iPhone 5C: "It's the most forward thinking phone that anyone's ever made".  While it's true that customers are going to love the $99/$199 price tag on this new phone (with two year contract), the fact that the phone comes in five new (bright and bold) colors is going to make it very clear who splurged and who went the cheaper route. For a really interesting look at how Apple's new iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C are going to measure up to the latest and most popular Android devices, take a look at this post.

That doesn't seem to matter though. Most experts agree that this new iPhone 5C is really going to shake up the cell phone marketplace, and that Apple is going to emerge the clear winner. Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes says that the 5C is most definitely the game changer for Apple, stating:

"The 5C should help Apple prevent share loss and even regain share vs. Android phones."

Apple is also currently in talks to partner with China Mobile to offer either one or both new phones to China Mobile's 700 million+ customers. If that partnership is finalized, that would be enough for Apple to take the market share over with no questions about it. Here's what Stifel Nicolaus analyst Aaron Rakers had to say about the possible partnership:

"With competition heating up, Apple has fallen to 7th position in smartphone market share in China in C2Q13 according to Gartner. While Apple’s brand image in China remains very strong a number of domestic smartphone manufacturers offering suitable products at compelling price points has resulted in Apple’s fallen share. We believe an iPhone 5C would integrate multimode capabilities that support China Mobile’s network and be priced at level more palatable for China Mobile than current Apple iPhone products. As a result, we believe an announcement of iPhone acceptance at China Mobile may be coming soon – perhaps as soon as September 11 in conjunction with Apple’s separate event that it will hold in China. As we have written in the past, Apple would likely regain lost market share and realize between $4 - $8 EPS over trailing 12-months post launch."

So, let's say a small business owner has to make the choice between Apple or Android, what is it gonna be? The logical answer is that it is going to be Apple. The iPhone is just a more well made device, plain and simple. It just feels good in your hand, and that is what Apple planned for it to do. The pieces of the iPhone are designed and fitted together in just the right way to make things "feel right". Even the most popular Android phone right now (the Samsung Galaxy S4) feels "cheap", slippery, plastic-y, and heavy, heavy, heavy. One of the best things about choosing the iPhone is that it integrates nicely into all the other iDevices that you probably already own. You can sync it easily with your iPad, iTunes account, Apple TV, whatever, and it will just fit right in. There is no learning curve, because most of us are already so in tune with Apple technology. The truth of the matter is, when you need a quality, dependable operating system and a great phone to go with it for your day to day business needs, Apple is the obvious choice.
