Periscope comes to dry land to improve social media interaction

periscope 001When Twitter purchased Periscope, the live streaming video mobile app in February of 2015, it brought the ability to communicate with a live audience using a mobile device. Periscope is an app that taps into the convenience of the mobile platform while incorporating notifications, location and social sharing (on Twitter, of course), live discussions and feedback. The interaction between everyone involved in a Periscope broadcast supports its goal of establishing and strengthening relationships.

Mitch Jackson, a 2013 California Lawyer of the Year and namesake of the Laguna Hills law firm of Jackson & Wilson, sings the praises of social media. “Lawyers who embrace social media show their human side, which is why I embrace it,” says Jackson, whose practices focuses on wrongful death and catastrophic injury cases.

According to Jackson, social media platforms such as Periscope and Twitter are ideal ways to communicate with others for at least two reasons:
  • To answer questions from consumers
  • Build goodwill among colleagues and peers
He offers other reasons why small business owners and professionals should utilize Periscope in a Facebook Live video chat that can be accessed by clicking here. In his presentation, Jackson says Periscope is a great way to monitor one’s competition. “It’s good to see what they are saying and doing,” he says.

To do that, a user should:
  • Sign into Twitter
  • Surf to www.twitter.com/search-advanced
  • Type the name of the company or law firm you’re seeking to monitor
  • Search away
After Jackson conducts one of these searches, he tailors his next business steps based on what he’s gleaned. Should he stay on course with what he has been doing or should he adjust, depending on what his competitors are saying and doing? For example, if he sees a direct competitor had tweeted something relevant about catastrophic injury cases, Jackson might do so, too.

Ernie Svenson is a once-practicing lawyer who now counsels attorneys how to improve their law practices via webinars, conferences and online posts, is the brains behind an effort to reduce paper in law practices. He also runs www.smallbusinessbootcamp.com, a web site devoted to guiding lawyers on ways to improve the methods used to deliver legal services and all aspects related to that. The information Svenson shares is applicable to professionals, in general, not just attorneys.

According to Svenson, business owners “need to realize they can develop a message designed to attract the clients they seek” if they post sincere, thoughtful and useful messages to their readers online.
